How to Maintain Classroom Discipline Film from 1947

Talk about “old school,” here’s a teacher training video from 1947 that gives pointers on how to manage a classroom. It’s fairly humorous, but I think it can also lead to valuable discussion. Try to disregard the “Leave it to Beaver” dialogue and focus on the points they’re trying to make. As you watch, ask yourself these questions:

  • Have things really changed in schools, or are we still teaching in this way?
  • Regardless of any changes in teaching methods, is the advice still relevant?

I’ve got my own ideas, but I’m interested in hearing what you have to say first. Leave a comment after you’ve watched and let’s get a discussion going.

Maintaining Classroom Discipline:

  1. I’ve got to say that I totally love this little film. Last week I wrote a post that generated a lot of discussion about approaches to discipline early in the school year:

Much of what was said in the discussion jibes entirely with what this film is trying to communicate. Of course, some situations which really require a firm hand are not dealt with here. Nevertheless, I think a good general principle is being put forth.

I agree. Engaged students=few discipline problems. Respected students=respected teacher.

I enjoyed reading your post and all its comments.
