He is a husband, father of four, Catholic school teacher and vice principal, and author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.romanreading.com\/\"><em>ROMAN Reading: 5 Practical Skills for Transforming Your Life through Literature<\/em><\/a>. In 2012 he was ordained a Roman Catholic Deacon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\">He is currently principal at <a href=\"https:\/\/johnvianney.com\/\">St. John Vianney Catholic School<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0in Spokane, Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\">His favorite books are <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Don Quixote<\/span>, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Lord of the Rings<\/span>, and the <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Master and Commander<\/span> series by Patrick O&#8217;Brian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\">Nick&#8217;s philosophy of reading is based in part on the following principles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"normal\">The only way to improve as a reader is to read.<\/li>\n<li class=\"normal\">Reading for entertainment and reading for enlightenment are not mutually exclusive.<\/li>\n<li class=\"normal\">Reading is &#8220;when, with nothing but the power of your own mind, you operate on the symbols before you in such a way that you gradually <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">lift yourself<\/span> from a state of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">understanding less<\/span> to one of <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">understanding more<\/span>.&#8221; Mortimer J. Adler<\/li>\n<li class=\"normal\">&#8220;The best effect of any book is that it excites the reader to self-activity.&#8221; Thomas Carlyle<\/li>\n<li class=\"normal\">&#8220;Some books are meant to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.&#8221; Francis Bacon<\/li>\n<li class=\"normal\">&#8220;Everything we read stimulates our mind to think, and what we think determines what we desire and desires are the seedbed of our actions. Given this iron law of human nature&#8211;from reading to thinking, to desiring, to acting&#8211;we are shaping our destiny by the books we choose to have enter our minds through print.&#8221; Fr.
