These books will give you enough read-aloud material to last an entire school year (and then some). After reading them for a few days I ask students to write their own 55-word story.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html%3FASIN=1582340692%26tag=nickslists-20%26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=\/o\/ASIN\/1582340692%253FSubscriptionId=1N9AHEAQ2F6SVD97BE02\" target=\"_blank\">3 Minutes or Less: Life Lessons from America&#8217;s Greatest Writers<\/a><\/em>: Great reflections and anecdotes that can lead to some deep discussions. Be sure to preview these before reading, as some of the content may not be appropriate for middle school.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html%3FASIN=0345440641%26tag=nickslists-20%26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=\/o\/ASIN\/0345440641%253FSubscriptionId=1N9AHEAQ2F6SVD97BE02\" target=\"_blank\">Dave Barry Is Not Making This Up<\/a><\/em>: Barry always brings a laugh, especially his four-part series on bad music: &#8220;Mustang Davey,&#8221; &#8220;The Whammies,&#8221; &#8220;The Worst Songs Ever Recorded,&#8221; &#8220;And the Winner Is&#8230;&#8221;; When I read these articles I bring a homemade CD of the bad songs he mentions for students to listen to, including &#8220;Having My Baby,&#8221; &#8220;Muskrat Love,&#8221; &#8220;Achy Breaky Heart,&#8221; and &#8220;MacArthur Park.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html%3FASIN=1594865132%26tag=nickslists-20%26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=\/o\/ASIN\/1594865132%253FSubscriptionId=1N9AHEAQ2F6SVD97BE02\" target=\"_blank\">The Intellectual Devotional: Revive Your Mind, Complete Your Education, and Roam Confidently with the Cultured Class<\/a><\/em>: This nonfiction book is kind of a &#8220;cultural literacy&#8221; collection. Each day has a different theme: Monday is History, Tuesday is Literature, and so on. I haven&#8217;t used this in class yet, but I plan to introduce it this year.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html%3FASIN=0671139401%26tag=nickslists-20%26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=\/o\/ASIN\/0671139401%253FSubscriptionId=1N9AHEAQ2F6SVD97BE02\" target=\"_blank\">Clifton Fadiman&#8217;s Fireside Reader<\/a><\/em>: Some of these fiction and nonfiction read-alouds are too long to read in ten minutes, but every one of them is high quality. Includes authors like Chekhov and Thucydides.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Out of Print But Worth Looking For<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html%3FASIN=0380699176%26tag=nickslists-20%26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=\/o\/ASIN\/0380699176%253FSubscriptionId=1N9AHEAQ2F6SVD97BE02\" target=\"_blank\">100 Great Fantasy Short, Short Stories<\/a><\/em>: This anthology edited by Isaac Asimov contains some real gems, including several variations of the three wishes story and the darkly ironic &#8220;Give Her Hell.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0886775329\/102-6410288-4324162?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=nickslists-20&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=0886775329\">Microcosmic Tales<\/a><\/em>: Also edited by Isaac Asimov, the collection features short short science fiction stories.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0880297697\/102-6410288-4324162?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=nickslists-20&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=0880297697\">100 Malicious Little Mysteries<\/a><\/em>: And yet another quality Asimov-edited collection.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html%3FASIN=0394412273%26tag=nickslists-20%26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=\/o\/ASIN\/0394412273%253FSubscriptionId=1N9AHEAQ2F6SVD97BE02\" target=\"_blank\">Alfred Hitchcock Presents Stories Not for the Nervous<\/a><\/em>: A collection of macabre stories edited by the master of horror.
