It&#8217;s been a couple of years since we posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nicksenger.com\/csc\/prayers-for-the-first-day-of-school\">this prayer<\/a>, so it&#8217;s time for some more. The following two prayers are adapted from prayers written by Dolores Curran. The originals can be found in Curran&#8217;s book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0896227030?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=nickslists-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0896227030\">Family Prayer<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parent-Teacher-Student Litany<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Leader:<\/strong> Dear God of all creation, thank you for the marvelous gift of learning. We beg you to hear our prayers for our school life. Come into our midst, into our minds and into our hearts.<\/p>\n<p><em>(After each of the following petitions, all respond, &#8220;Hear our prayer, O Lord.&#8221;)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For school boards and superintendents,<br \/>\nFor principals and secretaries,<br \/>\nFor custodians and bus drivers,<br \/>\nFor librarians and cooks,<br \/>\nFor teachers and learners,<br \/>\nFor buildings and playgrounds,<br \/>\nFor budgets and books,<br \/>\nFor parents and families,<br \/>\nFor assignments and grades,<br \/>\nFor field days and field trips,<br \/>\nFor book reports and homework,<br \/>\nFor kindergartners and school aides,<br \/>\nFor first graders and reading teachers,<br \/>\nFor second graders and music teachers,<br \/>\nFor third graders and school nurses,<br \/>\nFor fourth graders and room parents,<br \/>\nFor fifth graders and speech therapists,<br \/>\nFor sixth graders and playground supervisors,<br \/>\nFor seventh graders and assistant principals,<br \/>\nFor eighth graders and resource people,<br \/>\nFor freshman and activity directors,<br \/>\nFor sophomores and coaches,<br \/>\nFor juniors and drama teachers,<br \/>\nFor seniors and counselors,<br \/>\nKeep us all under your loving care this year, Lord, and teach us to love one another as we learn from one another.<\/p>\n<p><em>(After each of the following petitions, all respond, &#8220;Pray for us.&#8221;)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mary, mother of all students,<br \/>\nThat we may all be what God wants us to be,<br \/>\nThat we may accept the responsibilities of learning,<br \/>\nThat we may support our schools and teachers,<br \/>\nThat we may perceive, judge and act wisely,<br \/>\nThat we may grow in age and grace,<br \/>\nThat we may furnish educational hope for all,<br \/>\nThat we may change the world,<br \/>\nThat we may make new friends and keep old friends,<br \/>\nThat we may be patient with our students and teachers,<br \/>\nThat we may keep our school clean and pleasant,<\/p>\n<p>Come, O Holy Spirit, and fill the hearts and minds of your faithful. Grant us faith, knowledge and perseverance so that we may go forth and spread the Good News. Amen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Prayer for the First Day of School<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Teacher:<\/strong> As school begins, Mary, we put this year in your hands. We pray that our class will emerge in June more educated, more prayerful and more compassionate to others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All:<\/strong> Please pray to Jesus for us, Mary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teacher:<\/strong> That all children everywhere will experience loving teachers and enlightening classes,<\/p>\n<p><strong>All:<\/strong> Please pray to Jesus for us, Mary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teacher:<\/strong> That the school year will be filled with good friends, exciting school activities, and God&#8217;s love,<\/p>\n<p><strong>All:<\/strong> Please pray to Jesus for us, Mary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teacher:<\/strong> That we have a minimum of illness, unfinished homework and unkind behavior,<\/p>\n<p><strong>All:<\/strong> Please pray to Jesus for us, Mary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teacher:<\/strong> That we help new students to feel welcome these first days of school,<\/p>\n<p><strong>All:<\/strong> Please pray to Jesus for us, Mary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teacher:<\/strong> That we notice and are grateful for the many blessings God gives us this year,<\/p>\n<p><strong>All:<\/strong> Please pray to Jesus for us, Mary. Hail Mary, full of grace, hear our prayer for a school year that will please your Son, educate us, and help us to fulfill God&#8217;s plan for us in his world.
