\"SadOne of the biggest challenges we face as Catholic educators is helping students accept others who are different. Students get teased because of speech impediments, disinterest in sports, physical disabilities, sexual orientation, economic background, and even for succeeding in school. As hard as we work to prevent it from happening, teasing and bullying still exist.<\/p>\n

This morning Fr. James Martin, SJ<\/a>, author of My Life with the Saints<\/em><\/a> and The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything<\/em><\/a>, reposted a prayer he wrote to help anyone who feels “rejected, despised or excluded.”<\/p>\n

This may be the most important prayer you share with your students this year.<\/p>\n

A Prayer When I Feel Hated<\/strong><\/p>\n

Loving God, you made me who I am.
\nI praise you and I love you,
\nfor I am wonderfully made, in your own image.<\/p>\n

But when people make fun of me,
\nI feel hurt and embarrassed and even ashamed.
\nSo please God, help me remember my own goodness,
\nwhich lies in you.
\nHelp me remember my dignity,
\nwhich you gave me when I was conceived.
\nHelp me remember that I can live a life of love,
\nbecause you created my heart.<\/p>\n

Be with me, loving God, when people hate me,
\nand help me to respond how you would want me to:
\nwith a love that respects others, but also respects me.
\nHelp me find friends who love me for who I am.
\nHelp me, most of all, to be a loving person.<\/p>\n

And God, help me remember that Jesus loves me.
\nFor he was seen as an outcast, too.
\nHe was misunderstood, too.
\nHe was beaten and spat upon.
\nJesus understands me,
\nand loves me with a special love,
\nbecause of the way you made me.<\/p>\n

And when I am feeling lonely,
\nhelp me to remember that Jesus welcomed everyone as a friend.
\nJesus reminded everyone that God loved them.
\nJesus encouraged everyone to embrace their dignity,
\neven when others were blind to seeing that dignity.
\nJesus loved everyone with the boundless love that you gave him.
\nAnd he loves me, too.<\/p>\n

One more thing, God:
\nHelp me remember
\nthat nothing is impossible with you,
\nthat you have a way of making things better,
\nand that you can find a way of love for me,
\neven if I can\u2019t see it right now.<\/p>\n

Help me remember all these things
\nin the heart you created, loving God.
\nAmen.<\/p>\n
