Deal Me In Story #3: Buffalo Horns by Arthur Winfield Knight

Card Drawn: Q♠ Anthology: The Montanans, edited by Bill Pronzini and Martin H. Greenberg Story: “Buffalo Horns,” by Arthur Winfield Knight, 1991 For the first western short story of the Deal Me In Challenge, “Buffalo Horns” was a bit unusual. The story takes place in 1929 in Hardin, Montana. Not exactly the heart of the West. But that’s the point of this story, I guess. It’s a wistful look back at a time gone by, more of a vignette than a story. It’s beautiful in its own way, but...

Crescent City, California

Redwoods, Oceans, and Big Skies: Homily for the Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

If you drive to northern California through central Oregon, you cross the state line on US 199, also known as the Redwood Highway. As you continue into California, you reach a certain point where it feels like you’ve entered a fairytale. It feels like your car has shrunk, and now you’re driving a Hot Wheel, because there are these massive, massive trees stretching above you, over your head, these ancient redwoods. And if you get out of your car and walk around the groves of redwoods you feel...

In-Flight Photos and Video over Montana

As I make my way to Notre Dame, I am taken by the beauty and peace of this land America and the clouds that wreath it. Though I’m a nervous flier, once we’re in the air all anxiety ceases and I sit back and enjoy the ride. As we took off this morning, the space shuttle Atlantis also launched, bringing the shuttle program to an end. It is sad for me. I remember when my grandfather first told me about the shuttle program, and I recall watching the...

Cathedral of St. Helena

A Former Student Gives a Homily

We’re back! Our week at Notre Dame was fantastic, but there’s nothing like sleeping in your own bed. We had an uneventful trip home, praise God. On Sunday we drove through Helena, Montana to celebrate Mass at the cathedral there. I had never been there, and I was awestruck by the amount of marble and stained glass. Helena is not exactly on the way to anywhere, but if you ever get the chance, stop in and take a tour of the cathedral. I’m currently uploading all of my...

Wyoming Wildlife

Trip to Notre Dame, Day 1

I woke up this morning in Sheridan, Wyoming, after driving about 660 miles from Spokane, Washington yesterday with 13 teenagers, and 7 chaperones. Highlights of our first day of travel: Stopping at Lincoln, Montana’s 10,000 Silver Dollar Bar Attending Mass in Billings, MT with my parents. The young priest at St. Pius X Parish went to school with the deacon I wrote about a couple of months ago. Chasing a huge electrical storm across southern Montana. I really enjoy watching Montana thunder storms, but not while driving through...
