October 10th, 2007 · 1 Comment · Reading, Study Skills

The Study Smorgasborg has reprinted a set of 10 guidelines for reading non fiction by Paul Edwards of the University of Michigan.

Guidelines include:

  1. Read the whole book.
  2. Decide how much time you will spend.
  3. Have a strategy.
  4. Read actively.
  5. Read it three times.
  6. Read the parts with the highest information content first.
  7. Mark the book.
  8. Know the author(s)
  9. Know the intellectual context.
  10. Use your unconscious mind.

I’ve update the old “tried and true” SQ3R reading study-method for non-fiction to be a bit more in line with current reading research. I call it PQ RAR. Any comments would be helpful on this latest revision.
